A new classification system for invasive species took effect last fall under NR40. Also in this rule there is a prohibition against the transport of any boat or trailer with AIS attached, along with rules for vehicles leaving a boat launch or parking area after being in the water. The new rule gives the DNR enforcement power which will upgrade all our local AlS preventive efforts.
An effort was made in February to move the appointment of the DNR Secretary from the Governor to the Natural Resources Board where that power had resided until 1995. The MWIA communicated its support to our local legislators. The bill reversing the appointment power was approved by both the Assembly and the State Senate but was vetoed by Governor Doyle in November. An override effort then failed.
